Abstract

If there had to be only one word to describe Rand’s thinking, it should be: Brutish. Because that’s how not only her clear, unadorned language, but also her thinking is perceived by many, especially those who oppose her thinking, the school of thought she has sparked through her plentiful tomes of fictional writ-ing and the couple of essays, two of which I will consider as noted in the box under the headline, although the second book must rather be understood as a collection of excerpts from her fictional writing, introduced with an essay of hers—one that fits the single-word description about her aptly—and summing up the nonfictional virtue of all of her books. 

 The Intellectual Virtue of Absolute Freedom

    In philosophy, absolute freedom means the independence of all restraints, moralist as well as legal. It is usually marked as a negative freedom for reasons I am not going to dive into as we are not here to hold a Lycian debate on the philosophical stance; at least not purely, traditional-ly. (Other than that, we can note that negative freedom usually means the absence of a state to restrain one’s freedom of movement, speech or any other register) My interest is more obtuse, more politically coloured. I want to discuss the intellectual virtue of absolute freedom, although the word “absolute” is misleading, as it implies an egoist fashion pioneered by the likes of Ayn Rand and Max Stirner, the latter in particular. (Without turning into the true pioneers of ancient Greece, captivated by Plato in his dialogues, preserved in writings such as the «Politéia». As interesting as they may be, I haven’t read them and am uncertain about their value for the times we inhabit, with many more, much more current writers as those I mentioned heretofore and will add up in the later passages of this text)

Once upon a time, I read an article on ”Bigthink“, about an asteroid made of gold, which was close to landing on our planet. He didn't have the necessary size to cause a mass catastrophe comparable to the ”Big Bang“ that led towards the earth's creation, but worthwhile enough to immediately deflate our world's currencies. The article had me thinking about a common mind game among leftist ideologies: Do we actually need currencies in our societies? Or is it a disposable means only good for grief?

Und überall fragt man sich (oder sollte man sich fragen): Wäre vielleicht eine Minderheitsregierung die Lösung?

Warum die Rekommunalisierung die einzige Chance ist, die Welt zu retten

Die Gesellschaft zerklüftet immer mehr, ob man es glauben mag oder nicht. Gemeint ist damit nicht, dass sich mehr und mehr ein Bürgerkrieg heraufbeschwöre, allerhöchstens geschähe das momentan in den USA. Ansonsten aber ist schwerlich daran zu glauben, oder ist es schwerlich zu befürchten, dass die Menschen aufeinander losgingen, um sich um jeden Preis die Köpfe vom Halse zu trennen oder sich gegenseitig das Leben zu nehmen, ganz allgemein. Warum auch sollten sie das tun? Es ist nicht gesagt, dass sie generell das Vertrauen ineinander verlören. Vielmehr ist das Problem, dass sie das Vertrauen in ihre jeweiligen Staaten verlieren, die Probleme der heutigen Zeit zu lösen, sei es überhaupt oder im angemessenen zeitlichen Rahmen. Dagegen selbst vorzugehen ist aber durchaus möglich – wenn die Menschen sich vom Staate lösen und sich stattdessen auf kommunale Ebenen rückbesinnen.

What has drowned within a couple of days in the flood of information in Germany, and is of course unbeknownst to Americans since it deals with a local politicians some of us Germans might not have known if it hadn't been for the Union's loss of its sister party's absolute majority in its homeland of Bavaria, Freie Wähler's (FW) Hubert Aiwanger suggested that his country (whether he spoke about Germany or Bavaria is of no interest) would be much safer if all of us law-abiding men and women carried knives with us to protect ourselves. Immediately, the media and the internet rushed against him with full force. It came to my mind to wonder: How different are Germany and the US when it comes to the right of self-protection? That's why today's Sunday Message is in English.

In Halle in Sachsen-Anhalt ereignete sich in Anschlag, und fast schon möchte man froh sein, dass es noch so sehr die ganze Nation im Atem hält. Das bedeutet, dass sie noch nicht, wie in den USA, zur Tagesordnung gehören, sondern eine Seltenheit darstellen. Problematisch, wenn nicht sogar erschütternd, war hingegen der Kontext der Tat: Ein Mann wollte am Jom Kippur, den höchsten jüdischen Feiertag, in eine Synagoge eindringen, scheiterte daran aber. Daraufhin eröffnete er vor dem jüdischen Gebetshaus das Feuer, tötete insgesamt zwei Menschen, verletzte zwei weitere. Wie üblich nach solchen Fällen war der Furor in den Medien gewaltig, ein jeder haschte nach den neuesten Informationen, verfolgte gebannt Live-Ticker. Doch auch auf einer Metaebene gab es viel zu kritisieren.

Der Klimaschutz ist ein ähnlich polarisierendes Thema wie der SUV selbst, welcher infolge der Debatte um den Klimaschutz in den Fokus rückte. Vermarktet wird er in der Regel als sportlicher Viertürer, doch die meisten sehen in ihm vor allem ein Problem; eine Vorstufe zum Panzer. Seine Fahrer werden als Menschen mit Minderwertigkeitskomplexen und arrogante Fatzken dargestellt, welche die Innenstädte terrorisieren. Das Problem, welches er wiederum symbolisiert, ist weitaus größer: Es ist der Individualverkehr.

LEIPZIG (dpö) – Es war seit jeher abzusehen, und nunmehr bewahrheitete es sich in Form einer Verzweiflungsaktion. Am heutigen Tage händigte man dem noch-Ministerpräsidenten Sachsens, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), eine von Burkhard Jung (SPD) unterzeichnete und von den Bürgern Leipzigs verfasste Unabhängigkeitserklärung, die ihre Autonomie vom Freistaate Sachsen besiegeln soll. Trotz zahlreicher Proteste von außerhalb der 560.000 Einwohner zählenden Stadt sieht man sich dazu imminent genötigt, sich abzukapseln vom immer feindseliger anmutendem Bundesland.

In der letzten Woche fanden insgesamt zwei wichtige Treffen zwischen Präsidenten und Kanzlern (beziehungsweise Kanzlerinnen) großer Staaten statt: Da war einmal der G-7-Gipfel in Biarritz in Südfrankreich, und die UN-Artenschutzkonferenz (kurz: CITES), wobei letztere weniger Aufsehen erregt haben dürfte, in den Nachrichten hörte man womöglich nur von der Abschlusserklärung. Es lag auch daran, dass sie keine massiven Proteste begleiteten, wie es beim G-7-Gipfel der Fall war. Gemein haben beide Treffen jedoch, dass sie im Auskommen relativ inhaltsleer waren, wenig Überraschungen boten. Da fragt man sich doch: Kann man sie nicht auch einfach sein lassen? Braucht es sie überhaupt?

Wort zum Sonntag, dem 25. August 2019

Denkt man an Deutschland in der Nacht, wird man nicht unbedingt um den Schlaf gebracht, denkt vielleicht aber an einige Kulturgüter, wie beispielsweise die überschwängliche Bureaukratie, preußische Tugenden, wahrscheinlich auch an das Dritte Reich, aber auch an Socken und Sandalen. Dächte man aber aus unerfindlichen Gründen an die deutsche Cuisine, käme einem sofort wieder diese eine Grundzutat in den Sinn: Fleisch. Neben der Kartoffel wohl eines der Güter in Deutschland, die wohl nicht vom Speiseplan zu denken sind. Ist das aber so sinnvoll? Aus gesundheitlichen Gründen, ethischen, klimatechnischen? Da sollte man mal drüber nachdenken. Tun wir das also einmal!

Seattle (APC) – shortly after tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, announced his support for presidential hopeful and entrepreneur as well, Andrew Yang, who became famous among internet communities for his announcement to invent a universal basic income which he coined the freedom dividend, online retail giant Jeff Bezos announced his unexpected support for independent Vermont Senator, presidential hopeful and self-proclaimed Socialist Bernie Sanders.

(APC) – It was a constant hand-wringing and a melting pot between American liberals and Conservatives mutually fearing censorship from each opposite side.  Protests took place before the Supreme Court for months, but now, a decision has been felled, cheered by alt-right figures like Alex Jones, David Wohl or Steve Bannon: To avoid a packing of the Supreme Court, in a media stunt, president-elect Donald J. Trump surprisingly announced Fox News host Judge Jeannine Pirro the official successor of retiring associate judge Clarence Thomas, regarding verified rumors of his expected retirement.

Was Andy Ngo asking for it?

Portland, OR, has become a summertime melting pot for Antifa activists and self-proclaimed Proud Boys–each year, it seems, both groups gather together in this town to clash like warriors on a field to show how they were ready to fight for their ideals, respectively a strong Old Glory maintaining freedom and traditional values, and a diverse society where everyone was free to live as he or she wished to do so. But this time, something was different--a journalist, the «Quilette» editor Andy Ngo, ended up in the Antifa's gauntlet, being thrown with milkshakes and punchhes. This day ended in the emergency room for him, sadly. Some people on the internet applauded unto this vicious action, called it rightful, regarding his employment with the Conservative outlet, others were shocked by the behaviour on Antifa's behalf, obviously threatening press freedom with physical violence. And there's good reason to be shocked, despite a left-winged majority contradicting this normally self-explaining point of view.

Jack Kerouac’s “spontaneous novel” “On The Road» is renown as the most influential novel on the Beat Generation of the 1950’s, as a compass for many youngsters of this time, comparable to a Holy Script of who they were. This was only possible because Kerouac him-self was part of this culture, of this “movement.” As he wrote himself, he was travelling for a long time, not continuously writing on this book but only from time to time, not intending to finish it anytime soon. The writing process was a slow one, slowly but steady. What often goes unseen, on the other hand, is the diverse depiction of the zeitgeist in different regards – Kerouac’s protagonists Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty usually stop by in cities to visit clubs where various musicians jammed together, although they also coincidentally, but not seldom, happen to attend jam sessions with famous musicians of their time, musicians who obtained broad acclaim for having shaped Jazz music fundamentally.

The US are in great peril along the Southwestern border, due to a breaking point in immigration (1 | 2). More and more immigrants are asking for asylum in the US (3), thereby heating a de-bate that has been going on since the foundation of the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the George W. Bush presidency (4). People were debating the issue of who to grant asylum and who not to grant asylum ever since; people feared to lose their freedom rights due to lacks of security, families were afraid of a rise in crime despite a decreasing trend in criminality (5). Oftentimes, it was mentioned that the discussion had been polarized between two frontiers, namely the left wing that promotes a more liberal immigration law that would permit more asylum for apprehended immigrants, and the right wing that demands a stronger immigration policy that would permit less asylum to apprehended immigrants.

Zu Protestbewegungen im 21. Jahrhundert

Demonstrationen, egal von welchem Flügel aus und zu welchem Zweck, müssen, bevor sie stattfinden, angemeldet werden beim Ordnungsamt, ansonsten genießt die Exekutive die freie Verfügung darüber, die Versammlung rechtlich aus dem Weg zu räumen, da sie mehr oder minder gesetzeswidrig stattfindet. So weit, so normal, es muss schließlich alles seine Ordnung haben. À propos Ordnung: Selbstverständlich trägt derjenige, der die Versammlung anmeldet, die volle Verantwortung darüber, was geschieht während dieser Versammlung, ausgehend von den Teilnehmern; es ist also besser, schon vorher zu wissen, wie viele und wer genau daran teilnimmt, damit die Schuldfrage in zweiter Instanz schnell geklärt werden kann. Es will ja niemand für etwas die Schuld tragen müssen, wenn er oder sie darauf überhaupt keinen Einfluss nehmen konnte. Ist also so weit alles logisch. Gehen wir aber eine Stufe höher, müssen wir uns doch fragen, *wofür* wir eigentlich demonstrieren; was bewirkt diese Demonstration, dieses Demonstrieren? Bewirkt das überhaupt irgendwas?

Von der Gerechtigkeit im heutigen System

Wie erreichen wir tatsächlich Gerechtigkeit?

Kürzlich sah ich im durch Zufall in einem sozialen Netzwerk meiner Wahl etwas, was man im Internet des 21. Jahrhunderts jederzeit en masse findet: Ein Meme. Memes sind, was wohl wahrhaftig die meisten unter uns wissen, Bilder, meist komödiantischer, manchmal aber auch politischer, Natur, welche aus exakt zwei Dingen bestehen: Einem Bild, häufig auch gemeinfreie Bilder von Bildagenturen, und darüberliegendem Text, welcher entweder einen Witz mitsamt oder über dem oder das Bild, oder eine politische Message, also irgendeinem Ausruf. Jedenfalls frug das Bild, ob gleiche Rechte oder gleiche Ergebnisse (ich übersetzte es hierbei als Gütergerechtigkeit) zu befürworten, entsprechend durchzusetzen seien. Es machte mich stutzig.
